WCU to play four games this week, all on the road
2006: Had an all-around solid season, hitting a career-best .316 (68-of-215) with 17 doubles, four triples and 10 home runs ... His four triples ranked fourth while his 17 doubles were ninth in the SoCon ... Drove in 59 runs to rank fourth in the SoCon, while his 1.02 RBI per game average ranked third ... Recorded 17 multiple hit and 17 multi-RBI games, twice driving in six in a single-game ... Named the SoCon Baseball Player of the Month in March ... Was one-hit shy of tying the school record for hits in a single-game with a perfect 5-for-5 outing, including three doubles which did tie the school mark, against Georgia Southern in the SoCon tournament ... the five hits tied a conference tourney record ... Also swiped 12-of-14 bags in `06 ...Was named to the second team All-Southern Conference ... Defensively behind the plate, threw out 24-of-73 (32.9-percent) would-be base stealers.
2005: Played in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 2005 ... Had a good start to 2005, then suffered through a tough slump, going 3-for-49 (.061) from Feb. 27-Apr. 15 to bat just .223 for the season ... However, hit .351 (20-for-57) with two doubles and two home runs over the final 18 games of the season ... Threw out nine of the last 13 people who tried to steal a base off him ... For the season, threw out 14-of-35 (40 percent) would-be base stealers and WCU led the SoCon by throwing out 37 on the season ... As WCU went 8-1 over its final nine SoCon games, Murphy batted .304 with two home runs and seven runs scored ... Had a hit in 11 of his last 12 games, batting .326 (14-for-43) over the span, which included a career-long seven-game hitting streak ... Came off the bench to go 2-for-2 against Georgia Southern, as WCU only had five hits, starting Murphy's late-season surge ... Earned a start the following game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored ... Went 2-for-3 in the second game at UNC Greensboro ... In the second Elon game, went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a home run ... Only went 1-for-2 in the Elon finale, but scored three times and drive in one ... Was 1-for-3 at Georgia, but biggest contribution came behind the plate, where he had seven assists, including three in one inning with a pickoff, a caught stealing and throwing a batter out at first on a swing and miss on strike three ... Went 2-for-4 and had a walk-off, game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to give WCU a 6-5 win over Charleston Southern.
2004: Took a medical redshirt after only playing six games early in the season before missing the remainder of the season ... Was impressive in those six games, batting .296 with four of his eight hits going for extra bases (two doubles and two home runs) and tallying 11 RBI in 27 at bats ... In his first collegiate action (versus Wright State), was 2-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI ... Second blast was the first homer to clear the 14-foot section of the "Purple Monster."
PRIOR TO WESTERN: Rated the 14th-best catcher in the in the nation as listed by Baseball America... Turned down fifth round and ninth round offers, but was later drafted in the 37th round by the New York Yankees ... First team All-State honoree and was Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a senior ... Tabbed the Asheville Citizen-Times Western North Carolina Player of the Year ... As a senior, batted .452 with a nine home runs, 33 runs scored and 37 RBI ... A two time All-MAC selection ... Batted .397 with eight HR and 32 RBI as a junior ... Tuscola's Offensive Player of the Year his junior and senior years and Defensive Player of the Year during his freshman campaign ... Played in the North Carolina/South Carolina All-Star challenge, played in the North Carolina State Games, earning a bronze medal and participated in the East Coast Professional Showcase ... Finished his high school career with 18 home runs, 77 runs batted in and a slugging percentage of .784.
